Since late 2023, we have engaged environmental education organisation Outdoor Wildlife Learning Hong Kong @owlhk to survey the crucial freshwater-scape that nurtures the environment of Chuen Lung. Over an eight-month period, they’ve been conducting freshwater fauna surveys, using active search to capture, identify, and record faunas at the stream and agricultural areas of Chuen Lung. In this sharing, Dr. Ken So of OWLHK will provide an overview in freshwater ecologies and showcase their freshwater fauna field guide to Chuen Lung—an important resource that will bring our newly opened Koon Man Space closer to the environment of the scenic village.
James Kwok of natural history production company Frigatefilms @frigatefilms joins to elaborate on how we may use images as a way of storytelling to preserve, share, and hopefully generate conversations and actions to overcome the complex issues that are contributing to the deterioration of the landscape.
Dr. Ken So
If you have met Dr. So before, you should know that he is obsessed with dragonflies. In fact, apart from his fondness for dragonflies, Dr. So is one of the few scholars in Hong Kong who study the ecology of freshwater wetlands. He has also published various academic articles on the conservation and management of wetlands in Hong Kong.
In addition, Dr. So is committed to the conservation work in rural areas of Hong Kong. With his vast knowledge and experiences on ecological work, he has assisted a number of Nature Conservation Management Agreement Projects as well as Research Activities on Countryside Conservation and Revitalization. For instance, he has successfully conducted a reintroduction project of a locally threatened species, Oryzias curvinotus, in the rural Lai Chi Wo. He was subsequently invited by the International Union for Conservation of Nature to become a member of the Conservation Translocation Specialist Group.
Apart from contributions to research and conservation, Dr. So has years of teaching experience and is still actively involved in environmental education. Not only being a part-time lecturer in three local universities, he also designs and plans different ecological trainings and courses from time to time. By sharing his knowledge and experience in a vivid and interesting way, he aims for active engagement from the general public.
James Kwok | Wildlife Photographer
James, a professional wildlife photographer, developed a passion for observing and capturing local biodiversity from a young age. With a background in environmental science, he skillfully tells stories through his images. His work has garnered awards in local and international photography competitions, covering various aspects of nature from birds, herps to marine creatures.
Photography Salon is an initiative of the Hong Kong International Photo Festival (HKIPF). Hosted at the HKIPF’s new photography learning centre, Koon Man Space, this regular event aims to provide a platform for image creatives from different cultural backgrounds to engage in deep discussions with the public.
