Introducing: Tang Kwong San & Yuen Nga Chi

TANG Kwong San was born in China and now lives in Hong Kong. His practice combines photographs, drawings, objects and videos that trace intergenerational family memories and social history. Through reorganising and reinterpreting family photo albums and other items, Tang explores the intricate connections between longing, loss and belonging.

YUEN Nga Chi was born and lives in Hong Kong. She draws inspiration from life situations, family encounters, and personal work experiences, and explores and reflects through her photographic creations. In recent years, she has focused on the behavioural states of people and animals, and their analogous relationships.

‘Somewhere in Time’, the very first collaboration by Tang Kwong San and Yuen Nga Chi, is based on the different landmarks of telephone booths, using pinhole cameras and ready-made objects to tell the story of colonial history and the current situation of Hong Kong.

The work was selected as a Finalist of the WMA Masters Award (Light) 2019/20. Tang and Yuen will continue to extend the concept and content of the project by re-editing the existing materials and making new images as the city changes. This will be the first showing of ‘Somewhere in Time’ in Hong Kong.

Tang Kwong San & Yuen Nga Chi are participants of the Satellite Exhibitions 2023, an exchange programme connecting young image makers from Hong Kong and the APAC region.

Their programme buddy is Chen Yan-cheng from Taiwan, nominated by Lightbox Photo Library.
