Ike Cheung Lok Man (b. 1979) is a Hong Kong-born artist and designer ho spent a decade in Chicago. He graduated with distinction from The Illinois Institute of Art – Chicago with a BFA in Interior Design. Since returning to Hong Kong in 2010, Ike has built a diverse professional portfolio spanning Asia, the Middle East, and North America, with projects ranging from architectural interiors to community-driven initiatives and stage design.

Beyond his career, Ike is a dedicated volunteer and marathoner, translating this discipline and spirit into his artistic practice. While his earlier work focused on the timeless aesthetics of traditional blackand-white film development, he has ventured into exploring the synergy between digital technology and photography. His creations navigate the space between calmness and enthusiasm, blending architectural precision with profound humanistic sensitivity to form a unique artistic language.

The In-Between: Megalopolis Nebula

Science tells us that starlight is essentially a celestial vestige — a temporal lag across space-time. Its source may have vanished ages ago, yet when it finally meets our gaze, it becomes a brilliant manifestation of the present.

This series is not a search for distant galaxies, but a visual study of my daily passage through the architectural forest. Years ago, in the pristine wilderness of Africa, I stood under a boundless nebula-a cosmic encounter that was profound and crystalline. In our hyper-developed cities, however, starlight has become an obscured luxury.

Now, in the middle of my life’s journey, I focus on the overlooked gaps between structures. Within these canyons of steel and glass, the refraction of sun and neon is compressed by rigid geometry.

Through the abstract lens, these light-traces are liberated from reality, transforming into nascent, resplendent nebulae, as if stars were being born within the city itself.

To me, the city is no longer an obstacle to starlight, but the crucible that refines it. This is a psychological pivot: finding the infinite within the confined. I hope viewers experience this “quest for light”— a quietude reserved for the soul carved out of the urban clamor.

Wherever there is light, there is a universe.
